Born and raised in Lehi, Utah, Mike Hamby developed an early fascination with Native American culture, Western history, and the rugged landscapes of the American West. Much of his childhood was spent exploring Utah’s deserts, canyons, and mountains, immersing himself in the stories, traditions, and history that shaped the region. Those formative experiences continue to influence his artwork today, giving his sculptures and paintings an authentic sense of place, character, and timelessness.

Hamby’s work reflects the spirit of the West—the vastness of the desert, the majesty of the mountains, and the resilience of the people and wildlife that inhabit them. A man of many talents, Hamby has pursued a diverse and accomplished career as an artist, musician, published illustrator, and professional athlete. After starring at Utah State University, he was selected by the Buffalo Bills in the 1985 NFL Draft. He played four seasons with the Bills before a career-ending injury in 1989 redirected his focus to the artistic talents he had cultivated since childhood.

Returning to his passion for art full-time, Hamby quickly established himself as one of the West’s most respected sculptors. His work has been commissioned by prestigious organizations and corporations including Merrill Lynch, USA Today, the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the College Football Hall of Fame, and the National Wildlife Research Center in Fort Collins, Colorado. His monumental sculpture, Fierce Encounter, stands at the entrance of Cabela’s flagship store in Dundee, Michigan, and remains one of his most recognized public works.
