ABOUT THE ARTIST

Texas-born artist Matthew David Grant is a contemporary painter whose work seamlessly blends technical mastery with a bold, imaginative vision of the American West. Now living and working in Utah, Grant has built a reputation for creating powerful, emotionally resonant paintings that capture both the beauty and spirit of his subjects.

Grant earned his Master of Fine Arts in Figure Painting from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. His formal education was further enriched through private study with acclaimed artists including John Poon, Tony Ryder, Phil Boatwright, and Bryan Mark Taylor. While deeply influenced by classical training, Grant credits much of his artistic development to a lifelong commitment to self-directed study, experimentation, and an unwavering willingness to take creative risks.

Beginning his professional career in San Francisco in 2000, Grant quickly distinguished himself through his ability to merge vivid realism with expressive abstraction. His paintings often feature striking levels of detail balanced by bold passages of color, texture, and movement. Drawing inspiration from nature, he reimagines familiar subjects through a contemporary lens, creating compositions that feel both timeless and fresh.
Although portraiture served as the foundation of his early career, Grant's artistic exploration has extended into landscape painting, wildlife art, photography, drawing, and pastel work. This diverse background informs his distinctive approach, allowing him to capture not only the physical likeness of a subject but also its character, energy, and presence. Whether painting a weathered cowboy, a powerful longhorn, a majestic horse, or a sweeping western landscape, Grant seeks to reveal the deeper story beneath the surface.
The rugged beauty of the American Southwest remains a constant source of inspiration. Surrounded by vast landscapes, ranching culture, and the enduring traditions of the West, Grant finds endless opportunities to explore themes of resilience, freedom, and connection to the land. His celebrated longhorn paintings, in particular, have become signature works, admired for their dramatic compositions, rich textures, and commanding sense of presence.

Working primarily in oil and acrylic, Grant employs a variety of traditional and contemporary techniques to achieve his highly recognizable style. His paintings balance precision with spontaneity, inviting viewers to appreciate both the craftsmanship and emotion embedded within each piece.

Today, Matthew David Grant's work is exhibited in galleries across the United States and is held in private and corporate collections throughout the world. For Grant, painting is more than a profession, it is a lifelong pursuit of discovery. Through every brushstroke, he strives to capture moments of beauty, authenticity, and wonder, creating work that celebrates both the grandeur of the natural world and the enduring spirit of the American West.
