ABOUT THE ARTIST
Mark Gibson is a native Montanan whose work is deeply rooted in the landscapes and traditions of the American West. Born in Helena and raised in Missoula, Gibson’s connection to Montana’s rugged terrain and quiet beauty began early and continues to shape both his life and his art. His first introduction to painting came at the age of twelve, when his mother gifted him a set of oil paints, an experience that would quietly set the course for his future.
Gibson attended Montana State University on scholarship, where he studied architecture, an influence that remains central to his artistic voice. His understanding of structure, balance, and spatial relationships informs every composition. Whether painting expansive landscapes or iconic teepee forms, Gibson approaches each piece with an architect’s eye, carefully considering perspective, horizon line, and the flow of visual weight across the canvas. His work is grounded in strong design, yet softened by atmosphere and emotion.
Early in his artistic development, Gibson studied figure drawing and spent many years working in watercolor under the guidance of artist Hazel Foley. This foundation continues to shape his approach to oil painting today. After transitioning fully to oils in 1998, he carried with him the discipline and sensitivity of watercolor, most notably in his use of layered glazes. By building up transparent washes of color, Gibson achieves a depth and luminosity that gives his paintings a sense of life and movement. Each work is developed patiently, with careful attention to tone, light, and subtle shifts in color.
In 2003, Gibson further refined his practice while attending a plein air workshop in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, led by acclaimed landscape painter Jim Wilcox. This experience deepened his appreciation for painting directly from nature and strengthened his ability to capture fleeting moments of light and atmosphere. He continues to study both from life and from photographic reference, often working alongside fellow artists in Montana’s vibrant creative community.
A pivotal moment in Gibson’s career came through time spent with renowned Western artist Tucker Smith. During this mentorship, Gibson engaged in thoughtful critique, studied Smith’s body of work, and immersed himself in the discipline of continual learning. He remains a firm believer in the value of artistic dialogue and regularly exchanges ideas with respected painters such as Brent Cotton and Brian Schweine, conversations that continue to challenge and inspire his evolution.
Gibson’s recent work reflects a deliberate push toward purity of color and increasingly sophisticated composition. He strives to guide the viewer’s eye through each painting with intention, creating a rhythm that feels both natural and immersive. In recent years, he has also expanded the scale of his work, allowing for a greater sense of atmosphere and emotional impact. His paintings evoke not only a place, but a feeling. Quiet, expansive, and deeply connected to the land.
His subject matter is drawn directly from the life he lives. An avid fly fisherman, Gibson spends much of his time exploring Montana’s backcountry, often traveling by horse and mule into remote wilderness areas. These experiences are not simply references, they are lived moments that inform the authenticity and spirit of his work.
Mark Gibson lives and works in Lolo, Montana, with his wife Lisa and their two children, Josie and Cal. Surrounded by the landscapes that inspire him, he continues to paint the West not just as it appears, but as it is felt. Timeless, enduring, and profoundly alive.
