ABOUT THE ARTIST

For more than five decades, Lanny Grant has devoted his life to capturing the grandeur, solitude, and ever-changing moods of the American West. Residing near the small Western Slope town of Silt, Colorado, Grant draws continual inspiration from the rugged landscapes that first ignited his passion for art as a child.
Growing up near his father's ranch, Grant spent countless hours exploring Colorado's mountains, rivers, and backcountry. Family camping and fishing trips often became sketching excursions, laying the foundation for a lifelong artistic journey rooted in direct observation of nature. These early experiences fostered a deep appreciation for the land and a desire to preserve its beauty through paint.
Largely self-taught, Grant began working in oils at the age of ten and developed his skills through years of dedicated study, practice, and field experience. A pivotal moment in his artistic development came in 1965 when he met noted New Mexico landscape painter Ben Turner. Inspired by Turner's ability to capture the spirit of the mountains, Grant became increasingly committed to landscape painting and the pursuit of artistic excellence.
After graduating from high school, Grant attended Adams State College in Alamosa, Colorado, where he studied art history and life drawing. During this period, he frequently traveled throughout New Mexico, immersing himself in the rich artistic traditions of Taos and Santa Fe. The influence of the region's early masters deepened his understanding of composition, light, atmosphere, and the expressive possibilities of landscape painting.
Grant further refined his skills through portrait studies with renowned Dallas artist Ramon Froman during the summers of 1972, 1973, and 1974 in Cloudcroft, New Mexico. Froman emphasized five essential foundations of painting—observation, drawing, design, value, and color. These principles became the cornerstone of Grant's artistic philosophy and continue to guide his work today.
A passionate plein air painter, Grant has spent decades painting directly from nature, developing an exceptional ability to translate the subtle shifts of light, weather, and season onto canvas. His paintings are celebrated for their authenticity, atmospheric depth, and emotional resonance. Whether depicting alpine peaks, winding streams, aspen groves, or expansive western vistas, his work conveys a profound sense of place and a deep respect for the natural world.
Drawn to remote and untamed landscapes, Grant continues to seek inspiration in some of the West's most breathtaking regions, including Colorado's high country, the majestic Wind River Range of Wyoming, and other rugged wilderness areas. These adventures provide endless opportunities for exploration and artistic discovery, fueling a body of work that reflects both the grandeur and intimacy of the landscape.
Today, Lanny Grant is recognized as one of the West's respected landscape painters. His paintings are held in private and corporate collections throughout the country and are admired for their ability to transport viewers into the heart of the places he loves most. Through each canvas, Grant invites others to experience the beauty, serenity, and enduring spirit of the American West.
