ABOUT THE ARTIST
For more than four decades, Utah artist Kimbal Warren has dedicated his life to capturing the beauty, solitude, and enduring spirit of the American West. Renowned for his authentic landscapes and deep connection to the wilderness, Warren’s paintings reflect a lifetime spent exploring, observing, and honoring the land he loves.
Raised near the Wasatch Mountains outside Salt Lake City, Warren developed an early appreciation for the outdoors and a passion for drawing the landscapes that surrounded him. That connection to nature became the foundation of his artistic vision and continues to inspire his work today.
After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Brigham Young University in 1978, Warren committed himself to painting full-time. Like many western artists before him, he supported his growing family through a variety of occupations, including mechanic, horse wrangler, truck driver, hay hauler, and furrier. These experiences provided him with a profound understanding of the people, traditions, and working landscapes of the West—an authenticity that resonates throughout his paintings. He also proudly served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1971 to 1978.
A devoted plein air painter and outdoorsman, Warren is known for venturing far beyond the beaten path in search of inspiration. Traveling by horseback into some of the most remote regions of the American West, he packs camping gear, sketchbooks, and painting supplies deep into the backcountry, often spending days immersed in the landscape. The Wind River Range of Wyoming, Utah’s Uinta Mountains, and the canyon country of the Colorado Plateau remain among his favorite destinations.
Whether painting a mountain meadow at first light, a winding stream beneath autumn aspens, or the vast openness of the desert, Warren strives to capture not only the appearance of a place but also its atmosphere, mood, and sense of quiet wonder. Working from field sketches, plein air studies, and photographs gathered during his travels, he develops many of his larger paintings in his studio in Mapleton, Utah, nestled at the base of scenic Hobble Creek Canyon.
Throughout his career, Warren has traveled extensively throughout North America, Europe, and Asia, filling sketchbooks and gathering inspiration from diverse cultures and landscapes. Yet despite these global experiences, the American West remains the heart and soul of his artistic expression.
For Warren, painting is both a personal journey and a spiritual endeavor:
"Art is the personality of one’s inner self. My art reveals how I think, feel, see, understand, and experience life. Painting is a constant process of awareness and discovery. I hope the viewer finds a personal connection within each piece."
Today, Kimbal Warren's work is held in private and corporate collections throughout the United States and is admired for its honesty, craftsmanship, and heartfelt portrayal of the western landscape. Through every brushstroke, he invites viewers to slow down, reconnect with nature, and experience the timeless beauty of the American West.
