ABOUT THE ARTIST

Born in 1949 and a lifelong resident of Montana, Harry Koyama has dedicated his life to capturing the beauty, character, and spirit of the American West. Growing up amidst Montana’s expansive landscapes instilled in him a deep appreciation for the region’s natural beauty, a passion that continues to inspire his artwork today.

Koyama pursued his formal art education at Montana State University–Billings, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree with an Extended Art Major in 1972. The strong foundation he developed during his university years laid the groundwork for a distinguished artistic career spanning more than five decades. His commitment to artistic excellence and continual growth has earned him recognition as one of Montana’s respected contemporary Western artists.

Initially gaining acclaim as a sculptor, Koyama’s award-winning works have been exhibited and collected extensively throughout the United States. His sculptures have been featured in numerous exhibitions, including a prestigious one-man show at the University of Minnesota, and can be found in private and corporate collections across the country. His ability to convey movement, emotion, and a strong sense of place established him as a notable figure in Western art.

In addition to his success as a sculptor, Koyama has devoted himself to oil painting as a primary means of artistic expression. Drawing inspiration from the Impressionist tradition, he is known for creating richly textured landscapes, wildlife scenes, and Western subjects that celebrate the ever-changing effects of light and atmosphere. Working primarily with a palette knife, Koyama builds layers of vibrant color and texture that bring an energetic, almost sculptural quality to his paintings. His bold use of color and expressive brushwork allow him to capture not only the appearance of a scene but also its mood and emotion.

Whether depicting a mountain meadow glowing in evening light, a stand of aspens in autumn, or the rugged terrain of the Northern Rockies, Koyama’s work reflects a profound connection to the Western landscape. His paintings invite viewers to experience the beauty and tranquility of the places that have inspired him throughout his life.

A dedicated member of both the Oil Painters of America and the Oil Pastel Society, Koyama has remained actively involved in the professional art community throughout his career. His work is represented by respected galleries throughout Montana and Wyoming and is sought after by collectors who appreciate his distinctive style, technical mastery, and authentic portrayal of the American West.

Today, Harry Koyama continues to create from his Montana home, drawing inspiration from the landscapes he has known and loved for a lifetime. Through his paintings and sculptures, he preserves the beauty, heritage, and enduring spirit of the West for generations to come.
