ABOUT THE ARTIST

Raised in the farming and ranching country of southern Idaho, Glen Edwards developed an early appreciation for the land, animals, machinery, and hardworking people of the rural West. These experiences would later become central themes in his artwork. When a career in athletics proved unlikely, Edwards turned his focus toward art, dedicating himself to mastering the skills needed to communicate visually. He believed strongly that great artists are made through discipline, study, and hard work.

Edwards began his professional career in advertising and graphic design, an experience that shaped his strong sense of composition, color, and visual impact. His paintings are known for their bold color, confident brushwork, and dynamic use of light. Working quickly and often spontaneously, he sought to preserve the freshness and energy of the moment. Edwards placed particular emphasis on strong drawing, believing that solid draftsmanship and a clear light source were essential foundations for great painting.

In addition to his career as a painter, Edwards was a highly respected educator. He founded the art department at Utah State University and spent many years teaching and mentoring young artists. Under his leadership, the program became recognized as one of the strongest art programs in the western United States, emphasizing rigorous training in drawing and painting.

Edwards gained recognition for his ability to capture authentic Western subjects and “real” people in both watercolor and oil. His work was exhibited in numerous solo, national, and international exhibitions and received many honors, including the U.S. Art Magazine Bronze Medal Award of Excellence, inclusion in the Arts for the Parks National Traveling Exhibit, recognition in Oil Painters of America national and regional exhibitions, Best of Show at the Intermountain Society of Artists Annual Open Competition, and awards from the Eccles Statewide Exhibit, Dixie College Invitational, and the Festival of the American West.
His work was also widely published. Edwards was featured in Southwest Art magazine, and his paintings and illustrations appeared on the covers of numerous books, magazines, and publications.

Though Glen Edwards has since passed away, his paintings continue to be admired for their vitality, strong design, and authentic portrayal of Western life. His legacy lives on through his artwork and through the many artists he influenced during his long teaching career
