ABOUT THE ARTIST

David Frederick Riley is a contemporary Western painter recognized for his distinctive fusion of realism and abstraction. Since relocating to the American West over a decade ago, Riley has drawn deep inspiration from the region’s landscapes, wildlife, and cultural history, using his work as a way to interpret and engage with the spirit of the land.

Working primarily in oil, Riley’s paintings explore themes of identity, emotion, and the shared connections between humanity and nature. His subjects—often bison, longhorns, bears, and Native American figures—are rendered with a compelling balance of traditional draftsmanship and modern abstraction. Through bold compositional design, atmospheric space, and restrained, often monochromatic palettes, Riley allows form, movement, and emotion to take precedence over literal representation.

A defining element of Riley’s work is his process. He begins with loose, expressive brushwork, building compositions through large shapes and values before introducing layers of controlled disruption—dripping, splattering, and distressing the paint with mineral spirits. He then selectively refines areas of the painting, creating a dynamic interplay between highly rendered detail and raw, abstract passages. This contrast gives his work a sense of movement and tension, resulting in paintings that feel both grounded and atmospheric.
Riley’s work also reflects a contemporary interpretation of Western subject matter—bridging the gap between traditional Western art and modern fine art. Rather than focusing solely on narrative, his paintings invite viewers to experience a more emotional and introspective connection to the subject, making his work especially resonant with today’s collectors.

He earned both his BFA and MFA in Fine Art from the Savannah College of Art and Design, where he received the Outstanding Achievement Award. He went on to spend a decade working in illustration and teaching at Colorado Mesa University, further refining both his technical skill and conceptual approach before transitioning fully into his fine art career.

His work has received recognition in several prestigious exhibitions, including being a finalist in the Art Renewal Center’s Annual Salon, the Oil Painters of America National Juried Exhibition, and placement among the top 100 finalists in London’s BP Portrait Award. His paintings are collected both nationally and internationally and are represented by leading galleries throughout the Western and Southwestern United States, as well as in New Zealand.

Based in Midway, Utah, Riley continues to explore the evolving identity of the American West through a contemporary lens. His work stands out for its ability to balance strength and subtlety—capturing not only the physical presence of his subjects, but also a deeper sense of mood, memory, and experience.
As Riley explains: "My artwork is how I engage with this awe-inspiring land. My aim is to capture the West’s spirit, strength, and grace, and share that experience with others."
