ABOUT THE ARTIST
A lifelong Montana resident, Colt Idol has quickly become one of the rising voices in contemporary Western art. Deeply inspired by “the West” and all that it represents, Idol creates emotionally charged paintings that merge the timeless spirit of the American West with a bold, modern approach to color, light, texture, and atmosphere.
After an injury-plagued high school and collegiate basketball career redirected his path, Idol made the decision to pursue art full time. Under the guidance of his father, renowned artist and outdoor personality Dick Idol, he refined his technical abilities and expanded his artistic knowledge, ultimately discovering a passion that would shape his future.
Still early in his career, Idol has already garnered significant recognition throughout the Western art world. In 2025, he was named the Featured Artist for the prestigious Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival, solidifying his place among an exciting new generation of Western artists. Working from his studio in Whitefish, Montana, where he lives with his wife Jennifer and their two young children, Idol paints wildlife, landscapes, and Western subjects infused with dramatic contrast, fearless color, and luminous light. His work honors the history and cultures of the American West while reimagining them through a contemporary lens.
Idol exhibits in galleries and major auctions throughout the western United States. His work has been featured in many of the country’s premier Western art events, including the National Museum of Wildlife Art’s Western Visions Show & Sale, the Scottsdale Art Auction, the C. M. Russell Museum’s The Russell Live Auction, and the March in Montana auction.
“A time that no longer exists merging with a time that is dynamic in its use of color, form, texture, space, and light. ‘The West’ as we know it from history no longer exists, but ‘the West’ in this new age allows an opportunity to bring old and new to life. Whether landscape, wildlife or western, my work is emotionally charged through fearless color, tenacious light, and a divergence in contrast. My artistic endeavors are inspired by the history that’s right behind us, and the cultures of our ancestors that lived on the very land we live today. My artistic expression lies in highlighting a timeless, symbolic, and ambient West of old, to this new daring and vibrant era in which we live today.” — Colt Idol
