ABOUT THE ARTIST

Born and raised on a sprawling cattle and sheep ranch in the Colorado high country, Cheri Cappello developed a deep respect for the land, wildlife, and Native American culture from an early age. Her childhood was spent exploring ancient encampments and burial grounds on her family’s ranch, where she discovered artifacts and arrowheads that sparked a lifelong fascination with the history and traditions of the Native peoples of the American West.

Under the guidance of her grandfather, Cappello learned traditional frontier skills including trapping, tanning, and preparing hides and furs. Her upbringing immersed her in the rhythms of ranch life — hunting, fishing, working livestock, and living closely connected to the natural world. These experiences instilled in her a profound understanding of the balance between humanity, animals, and the land, themes that continue to shape her artwork today.

Drawing inspiration from Native American heritage and the disappearing traditions of the Old West, Cappello creates one-of-a-kind, museum-quality works that honor the artistry and craftsmanship of 19th-century Plains cultures. Her historically inspired war shirts, wedding dresses, ceremonial garments, and cultural pieces are meticulously handcrafted using elk hide and buckskin, then brought to life through intricate beadwork and authentic adornments reflective of period pieces.

Each creation is both a work of fine art and a tribute to the enduring spirit, beauty, and symbolism of Native American culture. Through her attention to detail and reverence for traditional craftsmanship, Cappello’s work captures the dignity and artistry of a way of life deeply rooted in history and connection to the land.

Cappello’s work can be found in prominent public and private collections throughout the United States as well as internationally in Europe, Africa, and Australia. She is represented by distinguished galleries across the country and has received numerous awards at prestigious national and international exhibitions.

Today, Cappello continues to live and work on a ranch in the mountains of Colorado with her husband and children. Through her art, she seeks to preserve, honor, and celebrate the rich heritage, traditions, and enduring legacy of Native American culture and the American West.
