ABOUT THE ARTIST

Born in 1961, Cary Henrie studied at Pratt Institute in New York City, where he developed the artistic foundation that would later evolve into his distinctive and highly recognizable style. Drawing inspiration from the weathered beauty of the American West, as well as the timeless elegance of Italian frescoes and the masterpieces he studied in New York museums, Henrie creates paintings that balance representation and abstraction with remarkable sophistication.

Henrie's work is characterized by a unique mixed-media process that combines oils and acrylics layered upon canvas. Each painting undergoes an extensive sequence of additive and subtractive techniques, including sanding, varnishing, taping, burnishing, painting, and selectively removing layers. This labor-intensive approach creates richly textured surfaces with a fresco-like patina, giving each piece the appearance of a treasured artifact shaped by time and history.

The artist describes his work as an effort to capture "a symbolic or time-weathered scene or landscape with an abstract sensibility." Through his distinctive process, Henrie transforms familiar Western architecture, landscapes, and cultural references into evocative compositions that convey both memory and atmosphere. His paintings invite viewers to look beyond the subject matter and experience the emotional resonance of place, history, and the passage of time.

Henrie's innovative work has earned widespread recognition throughout his career. He was named one of the "Top 10 Artists to Watch" by Southwest Art Magazine in 2006 and was featured in a cover story for Sedona Monthly. In 2007, he received the honor of being a jury-invited artist to the prestigious Florence Biennale in Florence, Italy.

Today, Cary Henrie's paintings are collected nationally and internationally. His collectors include notable figures such as Whoopi Goldberg and Debbi Fields, founder of Mrs. Fields Cookies. His work has also appeared in major motion pictures, further extending the reach of his distinctive artistic vision. Through his masterful blend of texture, history, and abstraction, Henrie continues to create compelling works that celebrate the enduring spirit of the West while drawing upon artistic influences that span centuries and continents.
