ABOUT THE ARTIST
Amy Lay’s paintings are instantly recognizable for their vibrancy, expressive looseness, and confident departure from traditional Western conventions. Her work carries an energy that feels both refined and untamed, balancing control with spontaneity in a way that invites viewers into a more emotional, intuitive experience of the subject.
Raised in the shadow of the Eagle Cap Wilderness in Northeastern Oregon, Amy’s connection to the land is not simply observational, it is deeply lived. Growing up on her family’s fifth-generation mountain ranch, she developed an intimate understanding of the rhythms of wildlife, the shifting seasons, and the quiet, enduring relationship between humans and the natural world. These early experiences continue to inform her work, giving it an authenticity and depth that cannot be replicated.
Primarily self-taught, Amy pursued her passion for art alongside earning a degree from Eastern Oregon University. What began as a childhood dream has evolved into a dedicated and ever-evolving career, marked by a commitment to growth, exploration, and staying true to her unique voice.
Working primarily in oils, Amy brings a distinctive approach shaped by her years of painting in watercolor. This influence is evident in her fluid handling of paint, her sensitivity to light and movement, and the atmospheric quality that permeates her work. Her bold, intuitive use of color, combined with a strong yet simplified sense of design, creates compositions that feel both powerful and effortless.
Amy’s paintings exist in a compelling space between realism and abstraction, and between traditional Western subject matter and contemporary interpretation. This duality allows her work to resonate with a wide audience. From seasoned collectors to those newly discovering Western art, offering a fresh perspective while still honoring the spirit of the genre.
Now a notable presence in the Park City art scene, Amy Lay is helping to redefine expectations of Western art. Her contemporary voice brings new life to familiar subjects, infusing them with movement, emotion, and a sense of modern relevance while remaining deeply rooted in the landscape and lifestyle that continue to inspire her.
